Spy cameras, as the name would suggest, are used for covert surveillance or spy purposes. However, there are many different types of spy camera and many different surveillance applications that they can be, and are, used for.
Basically a spy camera is a surveillance camera, either wireless or wired, that can be concealed within it’s location with the ultimate aim of it not being seen or noticed by any passer by in the area.
Some spy cameras come already built into inconspicuous objects (such as smoke detectors and alarm PIR units etc) whereas other cameras are labelled as spy cameras simply because they are very small and so easy to hide. There are companies out there who will actually build a spy camera into an object of your choosing, for an extra cost obviously! We believe that you know your location better than anyone and so if anyone can make a surveillance camera covert in this particular location it will be you – work out where you want to put the spy camera, the area you want it to cover and then think about how to make it covert…(you could save yourself a lot of money doing it this way).
As with any covert camera (either 2.4GHz wireless cameras or wired cameras) the most important question to ask yourself is the aim – i.e. what is your intended result?…once you know what you want to achieve you can then ask yourself other vital questions such as “how will I power my spy camera?”, “can I keep it completely covert?”, “how will I record the video footage?”.
Many people initially want to power their spy camera from a battery in order to keep this end of the system small, neat and compact. This is fine providing you only need your spy camera to run for a few hours at a time, you will then need access to the battery to either recharge or change it for a fresh one. One way around this issue is to hide your camera inside or near to an object that would ordinarily have a mains power cable running from it – you can then power your covert camera from the mains and so let it run 24/7.
