Unlike a conventional GPS tracker, the Pakatak CircleTag does not require a SIM card, mobile phone network connection or regular charging. Instead, it uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology and the Apple Find My network to report the location of the tracker when compatible Apple devices pass nearby.

With a replaceable CR2032 battery providing up to 12 months of battery life, plus a powerful magnetic case supplied as standard, this is a simple and low-maintenance way to add location tracking to vehicles and other valuable assets.

How does a Bluetooth Tracker work?

A BLE tracker works differently from a traditional GPS tracker.

A GPS tracker normally contains a GPS receiver and a mobile connection, allowing it to determine its own position and transmit that information over a cellular network.

This Bluetooth tracker does not contain a GPS receiver or cellular modem. Instead, it sends out a low-power Bluetooth signal. When a compatible Apple device is nearby, that device can detect the tracker and securely relay its approximate location through the Apple Find My network.

This means you can see the tracker's latest reported location without needing to install a SIM card or connect the tracker to a mobile network.

Because the tracker relies on other Apple devices being nearby, it is important to understand that this is not continuous live GPS tracking. Location updates depend on the availability of compatible Apple devices in the surrounding area.

The supplied magnetic case makes this BLE tracker particularly useful for vehicles and other metal assets.

The case incorporates powerful N52 neodymium magnets, allowing it to attach securely to suitable metal surfaces without drilling, wiring or adhesive.

The magnetic case measures approximately 41mm in diameter and weighs around 58g with the tracker inside.  With a tracker this small you can pretty much put it on any asset or item that you need to track.

For items where a magnetic mount is not required, the tracker itself is only approximately 32mm across and weighs just 5 g.

Long Battery Life – No Regular Charging

One of the biggest advantages of a BLE tracker is its extremely low power consumption.

The tracker uses a standard CR2032 coin-cell battery, providing approximately 10–12 months of operation, depending on usage and environmental conditions.

There is no rechargeable battery to remember to charge and no wiring installation is required.

When the battery life eventually runs down, the CR2032 battery can be replaced rather than having any downtime charging.

This makes the BLE tracker particularly useful for assets that may be stored, parked or left unattended for long periods.

Worldwide Location Tracking Using the Apple Find My Network

The BLE tracker uses the extensive Apple Find My network to help report its location.

When the tracker is within Bluetooth range of a compatible Apple device, its location can be securely and anonymously relayed through the network.

This means the tracker can potentially be located in many different places without having its own SIM card or mobile data connection.

Tracking performance will depend on the number of compatible Apple devices in the surrounding area. In busy towns and cities, updates may be frequent, whereas tracking can be less frequent in remote rural locations, underground car parks, enclosed metal structures or other areas where few compatible devices are nearby.

Please note: this is a Bluetooth network tracker rather than a conventional live GPS tracker. It is best suited to locating and recovering assets rather than monitoring their movement continuously second by second.

Important Information About BLE Tracking

This product should not be confused with a conventional live GPS tracker.

The BLE tracker does not independently calculate its position using GPS and does not transmit its location using a mobile phone network.

Instead, it relies on compatible Apple devices being nearby to report its approximate location through the Apple Find My network.

Consequently, location updates can be more frequent in busy areas where many compatible devices are present and less frequent in remote areas, underground car parks, enclosed buildings or locations where there are few compatible devices.

For applications requiring continuous live vehicle tracking, regular journey history or frequent location updates regardless of surrounding devices, a dedicated GPS tracker may be more appropriate.
