Some can be used to “listen in” live and these are often referred to as listening devices, whilst others are for recording audio to play back and review later at your own convenience.  Some of our covert audio recorders can be set to “sound activation” mode which means they will start recording when they pick up some noise such as a nearby conversation for example.  With these sound activated recorders they can just be left to do the job for you without you even needing to push a button to start recording, although they do also usually have a manual / continuous record mode too if that is what is required.
